I recently decided to do a slightly more permanent modification of my Mini, Sir Nigel Cooper, Esq., by completing the ‘One-Ball’ mod, essentially a resonator delete. Why is it called a one-ball mod? Well, the Mini’s resonator is massive . It looks like a second muffler to the point that people think it has two mufflers. When viewed from below, the twin ‘mufflers’ kind of look like, well, the car’s balls. So cutting on off...yeah...

Anyway, I dropped it by a highly-recommended local muffler shop after work a week ago. While I waited for them to get it on the lift, I ran over to grab some Plasti-dip to do a Bling Delete:

Before Bling Delete:

Kinja'd!!!

After Bling Delete:

Kinja'd!!!

Considering blacking out the wheels while leaving the rim as plain aluminum for contrast. I think it would make the rest of the car very well.

Back to the exhaust shop, the car was all done, minus 20lbs of resonator and $30, and I took it out for a spin. Once Nigel drove a few miles to clear his throat, I noticed a definite difference. The tone at low and mid range is considerably fuller and deeper, while the high end still has the characteristic rasp to it. I’m not a huge fan of the rasp, but I can live with it until I can afford to drop bookoo bucks on a full exhaust. The biggest difference is the amount of ‘popping’. While the exhaust still popped with the resonator on, it wasn’t as consistent or plentiful and would come and go. Without the resonator, the it pops much more- to the point I can basically do it on command any time I lift off the throttle between 2,000 and 4,500 rpm.

Here’s a video made of clips taken on my way home from work a couple of days ago that shows off the sound of the stock exhaust minus the resonator:

And for comparison’s sake, here’s a quick clip of the original bone-stock exhaust:

Bookoo.. Where are you from? I was recently down in New Orleans and my cousin and I were comparing lingo between DC an NOLA. Bookoo was really common. Telling me about his C6 Corvette: “I spent bookoo cash on the supercharger!”

Resonator delete sounds great btw, love the popping.

any drone to it now with the resonators gone?

It’s very slight. Just having the radio or A/C on pretty much masks it. Turning the radio up loud enough to cover the wind/tire noise also covers the exhaust drone.

I live in South Carolina, but my old man is from Louisiana and we’ve both spent considerable time in N.O.- though I’m not sure where I picked up the phrase. It’s been in my vocabulary for as long as I can remember speaking.

I tried spraying my roof. The texture came out uneven, so instead I peeled it off, draped it over myself, and ran around the house screaming “WHERE IS SPIDER-MAN!? VENOM WISHES TO DO BATTLE! THE SYMBIOTE WILL BE VICTORIOUS!”, effectively terrifying the cats and kids and making my girlfriend laugh so hard she pee’d herself.

For some reason, I don’t want it black. I’d rather just have it be standard frosted aluminum like the wheels.

Yeah, ‘bookoo bucks’ just rolls off the tongue so well, lol.

Sounds freaking sweet, like if Jag did a 4 cylinder F-Type. Also, I still think that dipping the trim around the base of the windows would complete the blacked out look.

That would probably be pretty difficult to accomplish, lol. Besides, I’m not really wanting to go full black-out. I just want to balance out the overall aesthetic so it’s not quite so ‘flashy’.

It’s not “bookoo”, it’s “beaucoup”. Philistine.

Mo’fucka’! I’m from the Deep South! We ain’t never spelled nothin’ French right!

Also, I tried spelling it right one time during a school assignment. A classmate came up to me afterwards and asked what ‘Byew-coop’ meant. From then on out, I decided some things were better spelled phonetically.

Nope, lol. I Googled “R53 one ball mod” and checked out some of the results. One of the results showed a diagram showing the exhaust system, which showed that the resonator is the passenger side ‘muffler’. Then I went to the muffler shop, told them I wanted a resonator delete. Once they got it on the lift, I showed them where the resonator is (since it doesn’t look like a normal in-line resonator) and showed them that they just needed to cut out all the excess piping and replace it with a simple curved piece about 10” long.

yes! I deleted the resonator on the GLI awhile ago

BEST $100 I SPENT ON IT. seriously. sounds much meatier, and if I hit the gas while it's cold, it pops and crackles like no other!
